How To Repair A Corrupted Windows Registry

A Registry is at the core of any computer that is running Windows. It has information about how your system works and appears. Errors in the registry can cause serious problems, like shutdown errors, start up errors and more. As we all know, those errors are common in computers.

How to Repair the Windows Registry, Step by Step

You will often get error messages that will tell you what you can do to fix it once there is a problem with the registry. Since there are too many to catalog here, you must go to the Microsoft Support Center if you have a particular registry fault, or try one of the many registry cleaners that are available online. These fault messages will often tell you which registry key is tarnished and if you are comfortable with your system, you can go into the registry and try to fix the key yourself. If you feel uncomfortable working on the registry, products like PC Health Advisor and Registry Booster will help you through.

One caveat about getting into the registry; changing one key incorrectly can brutally damage your system, so you need to be very careful. Make sure all of your data is backed up and set a System Restore point so that you can roll back the system if there are any problems.

Backup the Registry

You must backup the registry before you start working, but know that if you back up the whole registry, you may back up any errors that are present at that time.

1. Go to Start and then “Run”.

2. Type in: “ntbackup.Exe”(without quotation) and click “OK”.

If you only want to copy single registry keys:

1. Go to “Start” and then “Run”. Type in “regedit”(without quotation) and click “OK”.

2. Find and click on the key that has the information you want to edit.
